How the tip is calculated
The tip is a percentage of the bill; the total is the bill plus the tip; and the per-person amount divides the total by the number of people.
Total = Bill + Tip
Per person = Total ÷ People

Worked example
An $80 bill, 18% tip, split four ways:

How much should you tip?
Customs vary by country and service. In the United States, 15–20% is standard for restaurant table service, with 20% or more for excellent service; counter service, delivery and other situations differ. In many other countries, tipping is smaller or already included as a service charge. Check whether a gratuity has been added to your bill before adding more, especially for larger groups where it's often automatic.
